Think of something being lifted and set down somewhere much higher. What gets lifted changes from use to use: a person's rank, the way people speak of someone, or a person's own mood after good news. In every case the speaker is saying the same thing — this is now up high, higher than it was. That height is also why the word sounds serious wherever it appears.
