If a view is ethnocentric, it treats your own people, nation, or group as the normal centre, and measures everyone else against that. Other ways of eating, greeting, raising children, or running a school get called strange, less clever, or “not how things should be.” English uses this word with a : it is not a compliment. You meet it in school essays, anthropology, and news comments about bias, not in everyday chat at the night market. Though actually, it is not exactly the same as racist. Racist talk is about ranking people by race, often with hate or unfair treatment. Ethnocentric thinking can sit inside that, but it can also be quieter: “our way is just common sense.” People also stretch it to companies or fan groups that cannot imagine any other habit as reasonable.
