Ethnocentrism is the belief, or the habit, that your own race, nation, or group is the centre of things and better than others. People show it when they treat their own food, language, or manners as “normal” and everyone else’s as a falling-away from that. English uses the word with ; it belongs to essays, social science, and serious news, not to light conversation. It is the usual noun beside the adjective ethnocentric. A sister noun, , exists too, but you will hear ethnocentrism more. Though actually, it is not only about hate. It can be loud and ugly, or it can be quiet — a tourist who cannot imagine that another way of lining up, speaking to elders, or sharing a meal could be right. Teachers use it to help students notice the yardstick they did not know they were holding.
