1. 1n/ˌiː es ˈpiː/extrasensory perception

The ability to know things without using the five senses — for example what another person is thinking, or what is going to happen later. It is a claimed power, not one that science accepts.

朋友一猜就中,你可以說 Do you have ESP?。 前面通常不加 a 或 the,直接說 have ESP。

Example

How did you know I wanted bubble tea? Do you have ESP or something?

ESP is short for extrasensory perception. Extra- means outside, so the name says knowing things from outside the senses. People use it for reading minds, for guessing the future, and for sensing something far away. In ordinary talk it is usually a joke. When a friend guesses exactly what you wanted, you can ask if they have ESP. You are not saying they are magic; you are saying the guess was too good. Say it with no article: she has ESP, not a ESP.

  2. 2n/ˌiː es ˈpiː/English for specific purposes

English teaching that is built for one kind of work or study — English for nurses, for pilots, for business meetings — so the lessons cover the words and situations of that field.

這個 ESP 代表 English for Specific Purposes。

Here ESP stands for English for Specific Purposes. It is a teaching word. You meet it on course names, in teacher training and in course books, more than in daily talk. A general English class teaches language anyone might need. An ESP class picks one field first, then teaches the English that field actually uses. A hotel ESP course covers check-in, room types and complaints. Say teach ESP, an ESP course, ESP materials.
