Encryption is the name of the process of putting information into a special code that only some people can read — and also the name of the system of rules that does it. If is “to lock the words in code,” encryption is the locking, or the kind of lock. Banks, phones, and websites use it so that a stranger who copies the file still cannot read it. News talks about “strong encryption” when police or governments want a door they cannot open, and companies say they use encryption to keep your data safe. You meet the noun in tech, law, and the news more than in school stories. Though actually, students sometimes think encryption means making the file smaller. That is a different job. Encryption does not shrink; it hides.

組成From encrypt + -ion. The -ion turns the action into a name. Encrypt itself is en- + -crypt from Ancient Greek κρυπτός (kruptós, “hidden”).
