To decrypt a message or a computer file is to take something that was turned into secret code and change it back into ordinary words, pictures, or numbers that a person — or a normal program — can read. Someone it first: they hid it on purpose. Decrypting is the reverse of that. You usually need a key or a password; without the right one, the file stays a mess of letters and numbers. Computer people, phone apps, and spy stories use this word. Everyday speakers often say “unlock” or “decode.” Decode is a little wider (any kind of code). Decrypt is the precise word for undoing encryption.
組成de- (undo, reverse) + -crypt, from Ancient Greek κρυπτός (kruptós, “hidden, secret”). The crypt piece here is that “hidden” meaning, the same piece you meet in encrypt — not the underground burial room, though that crypt is historically the same “hidden place” idea.
