- 1a/ɪˈdʒɪpʃən/from Egypt埃及的
Belonging to Egypt, or coming from it: used about the country's people, its food, its language, its art and its very long history.
這是最普通的國家形容詞。凡是跟埃及有關的都可以用它。人、護照、食物、神殿的牆、一種畫法,都算。英文裡它要大寫,因為它是從國名來的。有一點值得注意:埃及的歷史很長。同一個字,既可以指金字塔那個古代世界,也可以指今天有人生活工作的現代國家。到底指哪一個,要看上下文。
示範例句 · Example
We had Egyptian bread with beans for breakfast at the hotel.
中文翻譯我們在旅館吃了埃及麵包配豆子當早餐。
This is the ordinary country adjective, and it stretches over everything connected with Egypt — a person, a passport, a meal, a temple wall, a style of drawing. English writes it with a capital letter because it comes from the name of the country. One thing worth noticing: because Egypt's history is so long, the same adjective covers both the ancient world of pyramids and the modern country where people live and work today, and the situation tells you which one is meant.

- 2n/ɪˈdʒɪpʃən/an Egyptian person埃及人
A person who comes from Egypt, or whose family comes from Egypt.
這是同一個字當名詞用,講的是人。它是普通可數名詞:an Egyptian、two Egyptians。有一個地方學習者常卡住。說「她是埃及人」,英文可以是 She is Egyptian(形容詞,不加冠詞),也可以是 She is an Egyptian(名詞,要加 an)。日常講話裡,前面那個說法常見得多。兩種寫法都要大寫。
This is the same word used as a noun, naming the person instead of describing them. It behaves like an ordinary countable noun: an Egyptian, two Egyptians, many Egyptians. Notice the little article difference that trips learners up — you say 'She is Egyptian' with the adjective and no article, or 'She is an Egyptian' with the noun, and the first is far more usual in everyday speech. The capital letter stays in both.
