1. 1a/ɪˈtæljən/from Italy義大利的

Coming from Italy, or connected with Italy — its people, its language, its food, its companies, or its way of doing things.

    英文用 Italian 這一個字,包住所有跟義大利有關的東西。可以是產地:Italian olive oil。可以是人:my Italian neighbour。也可以是語言:an Italian newspaper。中文說「義大利的咖啡」,中間有個「的」;英文把 Italian 直接貼在名詞前面,中間什麼都不加。還有一點很容易忘記:國家、民族、語言的形容詞在英文裡永遠大寫,就算在句子中間也一樣。

    示範例句 · Example

We found a small Italian restaurant near the station.

    中文翻譯我們在車站附近找到一家小的義大利餐廳。

Italian is the one adjective English uses for anything tied to that country. It covers where a thing is from (Italian olive oil), who a person is (my Italian neighbour), and which language is being used (an Italian newspaper). English always writes it with a capital I, even in the middle of a sentence, because the names of countries, peoples and languages keep their capital letter wherever they stand. One habit worth noticing: English puts the adjective straight in front of the noun with nothing between them — Italian coffee, where Chinese would put a 的 in the middle.

  2. 2n/ɪˈtæljən/person from Italy義大利人

A person from Italy, or a person whose family came from Italy. It is countable: one Italian, two Italians.

    文法可數名詞:前面可以加 a/an,要表示複數時常常加 -s。

    an Italian 就是 an Italian person,英文把 person 省掉了。因為指的是人,所以前面要加 an,複數是 Italians。第一個字母一樣要大寫。要注意的是,不是每個國家的形容詞都能這樣直接拿來當人用,換一個國名之前最好先確認。講一整國的人時,Italians 和 the Italians 兩種都很常見。

This is the adjective standing on its own, with the word person left out: an Italian is an Italian person. Because it names a person, it takes a/an and it has a plural, Italians. It keeps its capital letter. English allows this shortcut with some nationality words and not others, so it is worth checking each country name rather than assuming — but with this one it is completely ordinary. To talk about the people as a whole you will see both Italians and the Italians.

  3. 3n/ɪˈtæljən/the Italian language義大利文

The language of Italy. It is also used in San Marino and Vatican City, in parts of Switzerland and , and by Italian communities in places such as Argentina; it has many local varieties.

    文法不可數名詞:通常不加 a/an,也不加 -s 來表示複數。

    當語言講的時候,Italian 是不可數的。前面不加 a,也沒有複數。所以看到 an Italian 一定是「一個義大利人」,而單獨出現在 speak、learn、study 後面的就是語言。「用義大利文」英文用介系詞 in:say it in Italian、a menu in Italian。speak Italian 後面不加 in;但如果重點是「他切換成義大利文講」,也會聽到 speak in Italian。這個語言除了義大利,聖馬利諾、梵蒂岡、瑞士和斯洛維尼亞的部分地區也在用。

As a language name, Italian is uncountable: you learn Italian, you speak Italian, you say something in Italian — never an Italian and never Italians. That is the quick way to tell this sense from the person sense. An a, an or -s in front of you means a person; a bare Italian after speak, learn, study, teach or in means the language. Note the preposition: say it in Italian, a menu in Italian. After speak there is no in — she speaks Italian — although speak in Italian does appear when the point is which language someone switched into.
