你讓它跑,而且跑得遠
上一個家族講的是「誰在出力」,這個家族講的是出力之後被送出去的那個東西:車子、球。都是你讓它走,而且走得遠。
noun · A2
The activity of controlling a car, truck, bus or similar vehicle and making it go where you want, including how well or how badly a person does it.
開車(這件事)
Driving can be pictured as drive caught in the middle of happening: something is being pushed along and kept moving, and the word points at whatever is doing the pushing. A small wheel keeps the rest of the clock turning. Wind keeps the rain moving sideways at the window. A wish keeps a person going back to work on the same thing for years. And when your hands are the thing doing the pushing, what you are doing is driving a car, or sending a golf ball down the fairway.
The packet's Wiktionary entry traces driving to Middle English dryvyng and Old English drifende, the present participle of the verb that became drive, so the form has always meant something like the one that is pushing.
packet 裡的 Wiktionary 記載,driving 來自中古英語 dryvyng、古英語 drīfende,是後來的 drive 這個動詞的現在分詞(drive 加 -ing)。這跟核心畫面一致:這個字從一開始就是「正在推的那一個」。
