From Old French dragon, from Latin dracō, from Greek drakōn 'huge serpent', probably from derkomai 'to see clearly'.

Picture the creature from the storybook: huge, , long-tailed, with fire coming out of its mouth. In English tales it is usually the thing the hero has to face — big, hot-tempered and . That temper is what gets borrowed when the word is used about a person.
