Very quick — as quick as you can go. From the army again: quick time is a brisk walk; double time is a , about twice as many steps. An officer shouts “Double time!” and everyone starts running. Outside the army, people still say “do it in double time” or “we’re working double-time” to mean they are hurrying, or working extra hard and extra fast. It can name the pace (a noun), describe it, or tell you how to move. Informal when it is not military. Though actually, at work “double time” is also a completely different thing: twice your usual hourly pay, often on a holiday or extra hours. This entry is only the speed meaning; the pay meaning lives in another box.
