Speech that sounds as if it means something, but when you listen carefully you cannot pin it down. The words can be read two ways, or they go round and round so you never get a straight yes or no. People use it on purpose sometimes: a politician who will not answer, a salesperson who hides the real price. It can also just be messy, confusing talk. Informal. You say someone is giving you double-talk when you feel they are not being straight. Close to doublespeak, though doublespeak is the heavier, more “official / politics” word, and often means dressing a bad thing up as a kind one. Though actually, older comedy also used “double-talk” for a mix of real words and nonsense that only sounds like speech — that is a different trick, not this sense.
