Language built to hide the truth while sounding calm, official, even kind. The words can be read more than one way, or they swap a hard fact for a soft phrase: “downsizing” for people, “collateral damage” for killing people who were not the target. It is often done on purpose, especially in , business, and the news. The word is from double + -speak. It was coined in the 1950s in the spirit of George Orwell’s Newspeak in Nineteen Eighty-Four. Orwell’s book does have newspeak, oldspeak, and — it does not have the word doublespeak itself, though the later word clearly sits in that family. More formal and more “ideas / media” than everyday double-talk. You use it when you want to name the trick, not only to say someone is being unclear.
