1. 1

A doomster is, in the sense you will meet most, the same kind of person as a doomsayer: someone who talks as if disaster is on the way. The word is less common than doomsayer, and it can sound a little older, sharper, or more teasing — the sort of word you throw at a friend who will not stop painting a dark future. Online, people still use it for the loudest “everything is finished” voices. Though actually, in older Scottish court language a doomster was an officer who announced the judge’s sentence (doom once meant judgement). That sense is history now; can treat today’s word as a rarer twin of doomsayer.

    唱衰的人;末日論者(比 doomsayer 少見,語氣較舊或較嘲)

    archaicA judge; a deemster.

    • You are of opinion that the justice of an execution consists, not in the extent of the sufferer's crime, or in his having merited punishment, or in the wholesome and salutary effect which that example is likely to produce upon other evil-doers, but hold that it rests solely in the robe of the judge, the height of the bench, and the voice of the doomster?
