A doomsayer is a person who keeps saying that something terrible is coming. They talk as if the worst will happen — a plan will fail, the economy will crash, a war will start, the world will end. It is not a job. It is a label you put on someone, often with a little : you feel they enjoy the dark picture, or they are too sure that everything will go badly. Newspapers use it, and so do ordinary people when they roll their eyes at a gloomy friend. It can be fair (the warning turns out true) or unfair (the person is only being dark). A bit more formal than everyday chat, but you will still hear it in speech.
