From French diplomatie, from diplomatique, ultimately from Latin diploma — an official folded document giving someone authority to act for a state.
追到最後是拉丁文 diploma：一張對摺的官方文件，用來證明「這個人有資格代表國家出面辦事」。所以 diplomacy 最早講的是「帶著授權出去交涉的那份工作」，重點在那個代表身分——你講的話算數，但也不能亂講。這也解釋了為什麼這個字天生就帶著小心、有分寸的味道。
