Here defeated is not we lost the match. It paints a person who looks or feels beaten down: sad, slumped, out of fight, as if the problems have already won. You might see a defeated look after a long, hard week, or hear a defeated voice that has stopped trying. It can follow a real loss, but it can also be only a feeling — nobody has to have beaten you in a game. Kind people notice this look; it is a description of how empty and tired someone seems, not a score on a board. The same spelling is also the ordinary past of defeat (Our team was defeated 3–1), but this entry is the sad, unable-to-cope sense.
