The Decalogue is the Ten : the ten big rules in the Bible that God gives to Moses. Churches, lawyers, and history books like this word; it sounds formal and a bit old. A child would just say “the Ten .” The pieces of the name only mean “ten statements,” so a writer may jokingly call any short list of ten “sacred” rules a decalogue — though actually that stretch is rare. In ordinary talk and in class, it means the biblical ten, not a conversation and not a sports contest.
