A D.Phil. is a university degree of a very high level. You do not mainly sit classes and then take one big exam. You spend years on your own research and write a long, book-like paper (a thesis). The name is a short way of saying Doctor of Philosophy — though actually, philosophy here is an old, wide sense of “serious learning,” not only the school subject called philosophy. You can hold a D.Phil. in history, physics, or many other fields. Oxford and some other British universities write D.Phil. for the same degree that most places call a PhD. After you pass, people may put Dr in front of your name.
