Picture the kitchen itself — the pots, the heat, the chopping, the person working at the stove. 'Culinary' points at that whole room and everything done in it. It is the formal, slightly dressed-up adjective English reaches for when talking about cooking as a craft.

From the word’s history

Etymonline traces culinary to Latin culinarius 'of the kitchen', from culina 'kitchen, cooking stove, food' — a word connected to Latin coquere 'to cook', the same root behind English cook. It entered English in the 1630s meaning 'of the kitchen', and by the 1650s covered the art of cookery.

根據 Etymonline,culinary 來自拉丁文 culinarius(廚房的),源頭是 culina(廚房、爐灶、食物);culina 又連著拉丁文 coquere(烹煮),英文的 cook 也是從這條線下來的。這說明了為什麼它的重心是「廚房與做菜這件事」,而不只是「食物」——1630 年代進入英文時就是「廚房的」,1650 年代才擴大到烹飪這門手藝。
