Cryptography is the study of secret writing and codes — how to hide a message so only the right person can read it, and how to break a code someone else has made. Long ago this meant marks on paper and clever tricks with letters. Today it is just as much about computers: the lock on a messaging app, the shield around online banking, the way a website proves it is really itself. It is a formal, technical word, at home in science class, news about security, and job titles. Though actually, a lot of daily talk just says "encryption" for the hiding part, and leaves cryptography as the bigger name for the whole field, including the breaking and the maths behind both. It is the study and the craft, not the person (that person is a ) and not the everyday login word people in Taiwan call 密碼.
組成From crypto- (hidden, secret) + -graphy (writing, or a field of study). So: the study of hidden writing.
