1. 1

A cryptographer is a person whose work is secret writing and codes: how to hide a message so only the right eyes can read it, and how to read a message someone else has hidden. The study and the craft are called ; the cryptographer is the human being who does that work. You will meet the word in talk about spies and wars, and these days in talk about computers — the people who protect online money and private messages are often cryptographers too. It is a formal job-title word, more in news and textbooks than in casual chat. Though actually, in everyday talk many teams just say "the encryption people"; cryptographer is the proper name of the job when someone wants to be exact. It is not the name of the study itself.
