A geographer is someone who has studied geography to a high level — how places work, not only where they sit on a map. Geographers ask why a city grew here, how rivers and mountains shape people's lives, where food is grown, how climate and culture sit together. Some sit with maps and computers; some walk towns and talk to people; some watch pictures from space. If this subject has become your serious study or your work, you are a geographer. Though actually, people outside school sometimes say it for anyone who likes maps, the way they say “historian” for anyone who likes old stories. In careful talk it means trained study.
