The practice of getting members of the public to do work or think of ideas for you, usually for little or no money, often online. Wikipedia is a famous everyday example: thousands of people write and check the pages. A business might use it to name a product, sort photos, or gather designs. The word was coined in 2006 by the American journalist Jeff Howe, from crowd + sourcing, on the model of — sending work out, but to “the crowd” rather than to another firm. It can feel open and clever, or it can feel like unpaid labour; both readings are in real use. It is not crowdfunding, which is about money.
