corresponding is correspond + -ing; correspond is Latin cor- "together" + respondere "to answer", so the underlying picture is two things answering each other.

corresponding 就是 correspond 加上 -ing。而 correspond 來自拉丁文的 cor-(一起)加 respondere(回應、答覆)——字面就是「彼此互相回應」。這條線索很有用:兩件事之所以 corresponding,是因為其中一件動了、另一件就「回應」;或者你指著左邊那一項,右邊就有一項「應聲而出」。中文的「相應」「對應」剛好也保留了這個回應感。
