English coral comes through Old French coral from Latin corallium, itself from Ancient Greek korallion, the name for the sea material used in jewellery; the colour word is simply the material's name reused.
英文 coral 經古法語 coral 來自拉丁文 corallium，再往上是古希臘文 korállion——一路都是「拿來做首飾的那種海中硬質材料」的名字。也就是說，這個字從頭到尾指的都是那個「東西」；顏色的用法是後來直接把材料名拿來當顏色名，就像我們說「珊瑚色」一樣，先有物，才有色。
