If you are contrite, you feel truly sorry — not the quick “sorry” you say to end a conversation, but a heavy, honest sorry, because you know you did something wrong. The word is rather formal and a little old-fashioned. You meet it in books, in news about people who have been caught, and in church language. A contrite person is not only at being seen; they wish they had not done the thing. Teachers and judges look for a contrite face when they decide how hard to be. Though actually, people sometimes put on a contrite look without the feeling underneath, and listeners can often tell. It is stronger and quieter than “sorry,” and more about the heart than about the words you say.
組成From Latin contrītus, literally “ground to pieces,” the past form of conterō (to grind or bruise), from con- (together, thoroughly) + terō (to rub, to wear away). The old picture is a heart rubbed down to dust.
