Contrition is the feeling itself — the sorry-and-guilty feeling inside, not the word you say out loud. “She was full of contrition.” “He showed no contrition.” It is a rather high, formal noun. In church, especially Catholic church, it is a serious religious word for being sorry before God, and there is even a prayer called an Act of Contrition. In ordinary English most people would just say they felt terrible, or they regretted it, or they were really sorry. News writers like contrition when they ask whether a public person truly means the apology. Though actually, showing contrition and feeling it are not always the same thing — and that is often the point of the sentence.
組成From Old French contriciun (French contrition), from Latin contrītiō — the same family as contrite: a heart “ground to pieces.”
