Said so many times by so many people that it has gone flat. A trite remark is not wrong — that is what makes it slippery. "Everything happens for a reason", "time heals all wounds", "follow your dreams": these may even be kind things to say, but they arrive ready-made, and the listener can feel that no real thought went into them. That is the sting in the word. Calling something trite is a criticism not just of the idea but of the person, hinting they reached for the easy phrase instead of meaning it — so it can carry a suggestion of , of going through the motions. Use it about words, ideas, plots, songs, endings: a trite ending is one you saw coming a mile away. It is a somewhat formal, word — you meet it in reviews and essays more than in conversation, where people say "cliché" or "cheesy" or "so predictable". Note also that a thing can be true and trite at once; is about wear, not about falsehood.
組成From Latin tritus "worn out", from the verb terō "to rub, to wear away". So a trite phrase is one rubbed smooth by too much handling — a lovely picture hiding inside the word.
