1. 1

Contritely tells you how someone does or says a thing: in a guilty, truly-sorry way. He smiled contritely. She contritely admitted the mistake. The feeling is the same as contrite — a heavy sorry, not a light one — but here it sits on the action, not on the person as a label. The word is formal and a little literary; in everyday talk people say “sorry,” “in a sorry voice,” or “looking ashamed.” You will meet contritely in stories and news more than in the playground. Though actually, like contrite, it can describe a show as well as a feeling: someone may speak contritely because that is what the room wants to hear.
