A continuum is a scale of related things where each one is only a little different from the next, so you cannot easily cut it into neat boxes. Colour is a continuum: red slides into orange, orange into yellow. Skill can be a continuum too — from just starting to very good, with many steps in between. People use the word in school, science, and careful talk when they want to say “it is not either/or; it is a range”. The plural is continua or continuums; both are used. Though actually, in everyday English many people just say a scale or a range and never use this word at all.
