A clergywoman is a woman who belongs to the clergy. The word is clergy + woman, built to stand beside clergyman. It feels newer, because for a long time many churches did not let women hold those official roles, and some still do not. Where women can be priests, ministers, or rabbis, this word names that fact . Some people prefer member of the clergy or the exact job name, instead of putting -man or -woman on the end. Though actually, it is not a lesser or “” title. If her church or community accepts her as clergy, she is clergy.
