A clergywoman is a woman who belongs to the clergy. The word is clergy + woman, built to stand beside clergyman. It feels newer, because for a long time many churches did not let women hold those official roles, and some still do not. Where women can be priests, ministers, or rabbis, this word names that fact plainly. Some people prefer member of the clergy or the exact job name, instead of putting -man or -woman on the end. Though actually, it is not a lesser or “helper” title. If her church or community accepts her as clergy, she is clergy.
