A cleric is a person whose work is the church: a priest, a pastor, a minister, sometimes a monk who leads worship. It is a rather formal word. In ordinary talk people more often name the job and the kind of church — priest, pastor, 神父, 牧師. Cleric is handy when you want one English word for all of them, or when you do not want to say which church; news writing likes it for that. The group is the clergy; one person is a cleric. Though actually, many students meet the word first in games: there a cleric is often a who uses holy magic. That is a game class, not a real job. And do not hear clerk inside it and stop — a clerk today works at a desk or in a shop. The two words started as the same Latin word, because long ago the people who could write were often church people; then the meanings walked apart.
