    If a group is clannish, they stick very tightly to their own people and can seem cold or to anyone outside. It comes from clan, originally a Scottish or Irish family group, but today you can say it about a school , a village, an office team, or a family that never lets newcomers in. It is not a compliment. It is a little ; in casual talk people might say instead. Though actually, it does not always mean they are cruel — sometimes they are just very loyal to each other, and that loyalty looks like a wall from the outside.
