A clan is a large group of families who are all connected, often by a shared or a shared name — this word is often used for Scottish family groups, but people now use it more generally for any close, loyal group that feels like family, including a group of friends.

From Irish and Scottish Gaelic clann 'offspring', from Old Irish cland, via Old Welsh plant, from Latin planta 'shoot'.
