Picture a workshop that smells of : someone measures a plank, marks it with a pencil behind the ear, cuts it, and joins it to another piece until a door, a shelf or a table stands up straight. The material is always wood, and the work is always building or fixing something solid you can lean on. From Anglo-French/Old North French 'carpentier', from Late Latin '(artifex) carpentarius' = 'wagon maker, carriage-maker', from Latin 'carpentum' = 'wagon, two-wheeled carriage', a word taken from Gaulish. In English (c. 1300) it settled on 'one who does the heavier sort of wood-working', displacing Old English 'treowwyrhta', literally 'tree-wright'.
