1. 1

A calligrapher is a person who practises calligraphy: someone who shapes letters so they look beautiful, with a special pen, a brush, or a reed. English uses the word for the person who Chinese or Arabic script as high art, and also for the person who letters a wedding card in . Though actually, in Taiwan 書法家 almost always paints a picture of brush and Chinese characters; a Western calligrapher with a pointed pen is still a calligrapher in English, but in Chinese you may need 西洋書法家 so nobody hears only ink and rice paper. It is a respectful, slightly formal word. You would not use it for ordinary neat handwriting, however careful.
