A silversmith is a person whose work is to make things out of silver: jewellery, cups, spoons, frames, and other objects. They shape metal that is already silver; they are not the people who dig the metal out of the ground. The word is a plain job-name, a little old in feel, and still respectful. In older English towns you also meet Silversmith as a family name, because the job became the name. Goldsmith is the sister word for someone who works gold.
