Wiktionary derives this beck from Middle English bekken, a shortened form of bekenen, from Old English bēcnan / bēacnian 'to signify, beckon', from Proto-Germanic *baukną 'beacon'. A beck and a beacon are the same idea at different sizes: a sign that carries without speech.
