From Italian baritono, from Ancient Greek barús (heavy) plus tónos (tone) — literally a heavy tone. The old parts still point at the shelf: heavier and lower than a tenor, but not as far down as a bass.
來自義大利文 baritono，再往前是希臘文 barús（重的）加 tónos（音），字面就是「重的音」。這兩個字根正好指出它的位置：比 tenor 沉，但還沒沉到 bass 那一層。
