A trombone is a large brass musical instrument. You blow into a small cup-shaped mouthpiece, and you change the notes by pushing a long U-shaped tube — the slide — in and out with your right hand. That slide is what makes it special: almost every other brass instrument uses buttons called valves, which give you fixed notes, but the trombone's slide moves smoothly, so it can glide between notes. That sliding sound is used in cartoons and comedy for a falling, disappointed noise, and in jazz for a warm, singing line. Its sound is deep and strong, lower than a trumpet. You will find trombones in orchestras, in marching bands, in jazz bands, in church bands and in school music rooms. A person who plays one is a , or a trombone player. It is usually counted with the word play: "she plays the trombone." There is also a technical use in telephone and network engineering — traffic that goes out to a distant point and comes straight back, called trombone routing, named after the shape of the slide going out and back — but that is specialist, and your students are unlikely to meet it.
