In singing, alto is the lowest of the usual women's voice ranges (below soprano) — an alto singer has a lower, richer voice. It's also used for instruments built to play in a similar low-ish range, like an alto saxophone, which is smaller and higher-pitched than a tenor sax but lower than a soprano sax.

組成From Italian 'alto,' meaning 'high' — from Latin 'altus' (high). It sounds backwards for a low voice, but the name first described a high male part, before it settled on today's lower female range.
