A tuba is the big brass instrument at the back of the band — a wide tube ending in a large bell that points up at the sky. You blow into it with your lips buzzing against a cup-shaped mouthpiece, and it gives out the lowest sounds in the brass family, the deep notes you feel in your chest more than you hear. It is heavy: a player usually sits with it resting on their lap, and marching bands often use a shoulder-worn version called a sousaphone instead. In an orchestra there is normally only one, and it holds the bottom of the sound while the others sit above it. In everyday English the tuba has a slight comic shadow — cartoons use its low 'oom-pah' for something large and slow-moving, and people joke about the poor student who has to carry one home. Players are quick to say this is unfair; a tuba in good hands is warm and surprisingly gentle. The person who plays it is a 'tuba player' or, more formally, a 'tubist'. The plural is 'tubas' (you may see 'tubae' in old music writing, but nobody says it).
組成From Latin tuba, meaning 'tube' or 'trumpet' — the straight trumpet Roman soldiers used to give signals. English took the modern instrument name in the 1800s through French, German or Italian, all of which had kept the Latin word.
