A BA is a first university degree in a subject such as history, languages, or English literature. The letters stand for Bachelor of Arts. ‘Bachelor’ here is an old university rank, not ‘ man’. ‘Arts’ here does not mean drawing or painting; it means the humanities — people, language, stories, ideas — rather than lab science. In the UK and the US this is the usual first degree in those subjects, often three or four years. People write BA after a name on a card or a CV (Jane Liu, BA). The matching first degree in science is a (or, in American style, a BS). Though actually, universities now mix the lines: you can do a BA in some social sciences, and some courses that feel like ‘arts’ still give a .
