If someone is assiduous, they are very careful to do a job properly and completely, and they keep at it. An assiduous student reads the small print; an assiduous nurse checks the chart twice. It is a formal, slightly old-fashioned compliment — teachers and newspapers like it; friends at a night market probably would not. Though actually it is not the same as just “busy.” You can rush around and still be careless. Assiduous is the person who sits with the work and does not leave holes. It can even sound a tiny bit , as if the care is almost too much.

組成A learned borrowing from Latin assiduus, from assidere (“to sit down to”), from ad- (“to”) + sedere (“to sit”). The old picture is sitting down to the work and staying there.
