Affecting, as an adjective, means a story, a scene, a letter, or a piece of music that moves you — often toward sadness or pity. An affecting film can leave the room quiet; an affecting goodbye can make you cry. The word is a little literary, more at home in reviews and careful talk than in a chat after class. Though actually, this is not the everyday -ing form of affect meaning 'to change something' (The rain is affecting the roads). And it sits far from affected when that means 'putting on an act'. Think: the thing touches your feelings, especially the tender ones, and you did not have to be told to feel them.
