Abnormally tells you that something is happening, or measuring, far from the usual pattern — and that this feels strange, worrying, wrong, or dangerous. Doctors and news writers like it because it is precise. Though actually, it is stronger than very or quite. Abnormally high is not just high; it is high in a way that makes people check twice. Students sometimes try to use abnormal as the adverb (it grew abnormal fast); English wants abnormally there.
