An abnormality is the thing itself that is not as usual — especially a feature of the body that doctors worry about: a growth, a heart that beats in an odd pattern, a part that did not form in the usual way. The word lives in medical reports and science writing. It can also name a strange feature in data or in a machine, but the body sense is the one meet first. Though actually, having an abnormality does not always mean a person is wrong or in danger; many are small and harmless. Still, the word itself sounds clinical. In everyday talk people more often say a problem, something unusual, or name the part. Abnormal is the adjective (an abnormal cell); abnormality is the noun (an abnormality in the cell).
