Zingy describes something that feels bright, sharp, and full of life. It goes two ways, and both come from the same feeling of a small pleasant shock. With food and drink it means fresh and sharp on the tongue — the lift you get from lemon, lime, ginger, mint, or a cold fizzy drink. A salad dressing can be zingy; strong dark coffee usually is not, because zingy is about sharpness, not just strength. With other things it means lively and full of energy, the opposite of dull: a zingy colour, a zingy tune, a zingy advertisement, a zingy start to the morning. Notice that it is a compliment either way; nobody calls something zingy to complain. It is casual, cheerful English — common in food writing, recipes, and advertising, and more often heard in Britain than in America, where 'zesty' does the same job for food. It is an adjective, so it sits before a noun ('a zingy sauce') or after 'be' ('the sauce is zingy'), and it compares normally: zingier, zingiest.
