A zinger is a short, sharp, clever remark — the kind that makes everyone laugh and also stings the person it lands on. The picture behind the word is a thing thrown fast: it flies in quickly, hits, and everyone goes 'oooh'. So a zinger has three parts to it: it is brief, it is funny, and it has a little blade in it. You hear the word in talk about comedians, politicians in a debate, chat shows, and family arguments where someone's aunt says the perfect terrible thing at dinner. Common phrases are 'deliver a zinger', 'a real zinger', and 'she hit him with a zinger'. It is friendly, informal American-flavoured English; you would not write it in a report. One more thing: because the root idea is 'something with a sudden sharp force', people also stretch zinger to mean any surprising, striking thing at all — a shocking piece of news, a wicked spin in a baseball pitch, a hot spicy chicken sandwich on a fast-food menu. But the remark meaning is the main one, and the one you will meet most.
組成From the verb 'zing' — the sharp humming sound of something flying past fast — plus the ending -er, meaning 'the thing that does it'. So a zinger is literally 'a thing that goes zing'.
